Walk Bike Drive highlights safety challenges and asks drivers to take a pledge

Drivers along Fowler Avenue, one of the corridors highlighted in the Walk Bike Drive campaign.

Every city has challenging travel corridors where vehicles traveling at higher speeds mingle with people trying to get where they need to go on foot and by bike. It can be a dangerous combination. The Walk Bike Drive awareness campaign is striving to change that by not only calling attention to safer driving behaviors on Tampa Bay’s busy travel corridors, like Busch Boulevard, Fowler Avenue, and Hillsborough Avenue, but also by asking drivers to make a pledge to drive safely and be more aware of vulnerable road users.

Why a pledge? Studies have shown that people take to heart the commitment they are making when taking a pledge, particularly when it involves signing their name. To help encourage people to visit the site and ultimately commit to driving safely, Walk Bike Drive is conducting prize drawings for those who take the time to pledge. Each individual who makes the pledge is given one chance to win either $500 in Uber rides or a 50″ television. The campaign page also has short PSA’s with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office about specific safe driving behaviors.

To date, more than 300 people have made the pledge. For more information or make the pledge, please visit: https://walkbikedrive.org/.
