A free ride hosted in various cities worldwide, that aims to inform or remind motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride also honors those who have been killed or injured.
BLACK ARMBANDS ENCOURAGED
Distance: 11.7 miles
NOTE: The route will be a slight variance from the same as the one used last year to overcome traffic construction areas:
It starts from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa, then goes out Ashley, across Kennedy to Brorein and on to Cleveland, all areas that need improved bicycle connections for everyone. The route also passes the ghost bikes for LeRoy Collins Jr. and Diane Vega and the site where Peiter Vanvliet was killed on March 19, 2011.
While it is expected to have police escort, the majority of the support has been from the bicycle mounted officers helping us out. Riders will need to stop for stop signs, red lights and the like – in short, follow the rules of the road.
NOTE: Given the current weather pattern – The Ride of Silence will take place rain or shine, but not if there’s a special light show going on. The ride will happen in the rain, but not if thunderstorms are lurking. The thunderstorm date is Saturday, May 20, 7 PM at same starting point. Route and other details will also be the same.
