Bicycle Friendly Business* is thriving in the Tampa Bay region. The League of American Bicyclists, as part of its Bicycle Friendly America℠ Program, has just awarded twelve additional Tampa Bay area businesses with the prestigious designation of being Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFBs). Nationally, this moves St. Petersburg to the fourth highest number of BFBs in the country, with 32 total, and Tampa directly behind in fifth position, at 30 total BFBs, as compared to all other cities around the U.S.
The Bicycle Friendly Business award designations range from Bronze level, the lowest tier, then Silver, to Gold, up to Platinum level, which is extremely difficult to achieve. Applicants submit information about how their businesses support bicyclists and the cycling community, including parking and amenities, advocacy efforts, customer perks, and employee benefits. Customers and staff also have the opportunity to supply feedback through a public survey. This latest award round includes one Gold-level designated business, Coast Bike Share, which is the first business to receive a Gold award in St. Petersburg, and only the second business in the entire Tampa Bay region.
Alongside Coast’s Gold-level designation, there were six Silver-designated companies in St. Petersburg, including the City of St. Petersburg City Hall, City of St. Petersburg Municipal Services Center, The Greenhouse, Preserve the ‘Burg, and The Bikery, and one Silver designee in Tampa, VHB. There were also a number of Bronze awardees, including Cycle Brewing, Pesky Pelican Brew Pub, TapHouse 61, The Hangar Restaurant & Flight Lounge, and The Wheelhouse, all located in St. Petersburg.
