Bicycle Friendly Business goes “Platinum” in St. Petersburg

The list of Bicycle Friendly Businesses continues to grow in St. Petersburg. The League of American Bicyclists (The League), the nationally-renowned organization that evaluates bicycle friendliness for businesses, universities, and communities, recently announced four additional St. Petersburg businesses have joined the Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) ranks. These four additions, including a Platinum awardee, add to a total of 36 BFBs in St. Petersburg and reaffirm the city’s position as fourth in the nation for the total number of BFBs.

The League has a tiered system for officially ranking bicycle-friendliness: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. One of the new additions, The St. Petersburg Co-op, is the first-ever organization in Tampa Bay to achieve a Platinum designation and is only the second Platinum BFB in the entire state of Florida. To offer some perspective: of the more than 1,300 total BFBs nationwide, there are only 53 Platinum BFBs, including the St. Petersburg Co-op and the other Florida awardee, located in South Miami.

It is also noteworthy that ABC Bicycles and Trek Bicycle Store St. Petersburg have been awarded Gold, the next most prestigious designation. These two businesses join Coast Bike Share for a total of three BFBs in the city to achieve this level.

1211 1st, a mixed-use building on First Avenue N., joins the list of Bronze awardees. This is the second time 1211 1st has submitted a BFB application to The League. Their first attempt resulted in an honorable mention; as part of the application process, the business was provided feedback on how to become more bicycle friendly. 1211 1st heeded the The League’s advice and their efforts paid off.

Being designated a BFB involves submitting a comprehensive application. Businesses have to demonstrate that they are not only philosophically supportive of bicycling, but also provide bicycle parking, community support, and other services that bolster both employees and guests who bicycle.
