March is the perfect time of year to ride a bicycle in Florida, so much so that the Florida Bicycle Association designates March as Florida Bike Month due to the wonderful weather. March is also a great time to try cycling; there will be plenty of events celebrating bicycling and providing opportunities to participate in a variety of activities in your neighborhood, regardless of your experience level.
Casual bicycling events are great for beginners and novices. One example is the Fourth Annual City of Temple Terrace “Bike With the Mayor“. Bike/Walk Tampa Bay is working with the City of Temple Terrace to organize the rides. Friends and neighbors are invited to meet on March 17 at 7:30 a.m. for coffee, bagels, free bike lights, and safety information. The ride, led by Mayor Kim Leinbach, begins at 8:00 a.m. and the first 100 adults will get this year’s “I Rode with the Mayor” t-shirt.
Plant City will also be hosting their first mayor ride, with Mayor Rick Lott. That ride will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:30 a.m. There will be free shirts and light refreshments, as well as bicycle lights and other safety information.
BikeSmart classes will also be offered throughout the region. BikeSmart is a one-hour classroom course that covers bicycle laws, common crash types, lane positioning, and how to be prepared every time you ride. Click Here to RSVP to an upcoming class or host your own!
There are plenty of other fun events as well as opportunities to make your voice heard, as several public meetings that focus on bicycling will be held throughout the region. The City of St. Petersburg is hosting a series of Complete Streets workshops during March.
