Kenneth City Police Department hosts “Biking with a Badge” ride

The Kenneth City Police Department (KCPD) hosted a “Biking with a Badge” Event on Thursday, May 17, 2018. The officers truly led a ride around the town, supporting healthy activity for all ages and forming friendships with all who came out to pedal. They used the opportunity to go over cycling laws and rules of the road with an enthusiastic group that plans to share the road and ride correctly.

The event was well attended and started at the Community Hall. After a safety briefing with Community Policing Officer Beltran, the guest speaker, Tiffany Sabiel from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Safe Routes to School Program, spoke about helmet fitting and day and night time visibility on the roadway. She made sure that all the kids attending understood safety basics and the little ones learned a new vocabulary word: “pedestrian.” Sabiel and the officers assured everyone had a fitted helmet, a good piece of visible wear or vest on, and then the attendees took to their bicycles. They rode 1 mile to a Town Park practicing the educational tips covered in the briefing about stopping, turning and being visible. At the park they rested, enjoyed water and a light snack.

After the stop, they rode back and finished the event by raffling off two bikes which were purchased with donations from local businesses and which were signed by NASCAR Driver and Alert Today Florida spokesman Scott Lagasse Jr.
