Tampa Bay Bike Challenge sparks friendly competition between local workplaces

Tampa Bay Bike Challenge participants share highlights from their rides. Top L to bottom R: "Bearss & Florida" by Brentin Mosher; "Bicycle tree" by Susie Cooke; Chan Bliss; "Trail ends" by Dave Sarcevic; Dayna Lazarus; Paula Flores & riding partner; and Thayron Byrd.

Bike/Walk Tampa Bay (BWTB) hosted the Tampa Bay Bike Challenge to celebrate Florida Bike Month and encourage more people to ride bikes. There was an additional upside to the Challenge: help spread bicyclist awareness to local employers. All during March, BWTB invited workplaces to create teams within the Challenge platform and encourage their employees log rides, even if the rides weren’t specifically to commute to work by bike. The result? Spurring a little friendly competition among workplaces while getting people out on bikes.

Of the 356 total riders who logged rides as part of the Tampa Bay Bike Challenge, 111 rode under their respective workplace banner, helping their companies stand out as bicycle encouragement leaders. At the end of the Challenge, workplaces were ranked based on the total number of employees and how many points those employees who participated earned through logging rides, tallying miles ridden, and encouraging others to join the Challenge.

Every workplace team got a little notoriety online and the riders who made it all happen had an additional way to let their employers know that bicycling is important to them! Check out the Top Three in each category and visit www.lovetoride.net/tampabay for a full list of participating companies!
