Summer Summit brings community together to move region forward

Florida Department of Transportation District Seven Secretary David Gwynn addresses the crowd at the BWTB Summer Summit.

On July 19, 2018, the Bike/Walk Tampa Bay (BWTB) Advisory Board  hosted its Summer Summit at the University Mall in Uptown Tampa. Nearly 100 regional stakeholders and members of the public gathered together to participate in conversations about bicycling and walking. Prior to the official start of the summit, some attendees took a tour of WellBuilt Bikes, a co-op located in the mall. The tour was led by WellBuilt CEO Jon Dengler.

The Center for Urban Transportation Research demonstrated to attendees how onstreet “pop-up” events are being used to reach bicyclists and pedestrians by displaying the “Walk. Bike. Drive.” tent at the summit venue. Attendees were invited to interact with the exhibit to learn about the “Walk. Bike. Drive.” educational campaign.

BWTB Advisory Board Chair Jane Castor began the summit by recognizing her fellow BWTB Advisory Board members and introducing Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Seven Secretary David Gwynn. Secretary Gwynn affirmed FDOT’s commitment to reducing pedestrian and bicyclist crashes.

Next, Jane Castor moderated a panel who spoke about issues specific to women bicycling in the Tampa Bay area. The panel was comprised of Sarah Myhre from Oliver’s Cycle Sports, Ellen Kast from American Classic, and Katie Roders Turner, founder of the History Bike Tampa tour.

Attendees participated in breakout sessions to discuss regional priorities which had been identified during previous summits. After the discussions, the program continued with the second annual BWTB Awards. You can read more about the awards here.

To conclude the summit, keynote speaker Steve Brown, recipient of the 2018 Michael R. Schwaid Bicyclist of the Year award, spoke about how to ride safely in traffic. His presentation covered tips that were useful for both group rides and for the individual rider.
